CCAC In the News: NDP and Conservatives demand audit

Community Care Access Centres (CCAC) have been receiving a significant amount of attention both at Queen’s Park and in the media. Both the NDP and Conservative parties have expressed outrage at spending and accountability by CCACs. On March 3, NDP MPP France Gelinas called on Health Minister Deb Matthews to support her motion to review CCAC spendings. On March 5, Christine Elliott, Conservative health critic tabled her own motion calling for the Auditor General to review CCAC salaries and expenses. The criticisms stemmed from the revelation that Sandra Coleman, CEO of Southwest Local CCCAC received a salary increase of 144%. The MPPs noted that CCAC CEOs receive average salaries of $234,000 while frontline personal support workers make do with some $20,000.

In response to the criticisms, Health Minister Deb Matthews defended steps her government had taken to consolidate the CCAC structure and reign in spending. While Minister Matthews indicated that her government was open to reviewing the CCAC, stating that she was “open to looking closely at how we provide home care services to ensure our new investments are of the greatest benefit to patients on the frontlines”, it is not clear what level of scrutiny this will entail and if this will satisfy the demands of the opposition at Queens Park.
