Amour, Michael Haneke’s Film About Aging and Death Wins Top Prize at Cannes

In our May 24, 2012 blog, we wrote of the rave reviews received at Cannes for Belgian director Michael Haneke’s film Amour which chronicles the relationship of an older couple as they grapple with the wife’s debilitating stroke and its aftermath. Critics and audiences were taken with the film and speculation was rife that Haneke would win the top prize at the festival. In the end, the Cannes jury, headed by Italian director Nanni Moretti agreed with the rave reviews and awarded Haneke the Palme D’Or. Haneke accepted (his second) Palme D’Or accompanied by his stars, 85-year-old Emmanuelle Riva and 81-year-old Jean-Louis Trintignant, both of whom received a standing ovation from the audience.
