April is Make a Power of Attorney Month: Ontario Bar Association

The Ontario Bar Association has launched the first annual Make a Power of Attorney Month in April 2014.  The event is in recognition of the importance of advance planning and ensuring that decisions can be made for someone in the event of incapacity in the future.  Make a Power of Attorney Month focuses on educating individuals on the types of advance planning that are available and in particular, the two different kinds of power of attorney documents:  Continuing Power of Attorney for Property, and Power of Attorney for Personal Care.

The event also emphasizes the importance of getting a lawyer to help draft one’s power of attorney documents to ensure they actually have the effect and utility the drafter intends.
