An article in the May 6th Globe and Mail features a new program put on by the Art Gallery of Ontario specifically for those with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia. The gallery offers monthly one-hour tours in which patients and caregivers together explore a handful of works of art, and are guided to share their feelings about those works in a discussion that fosters in-the-moment enjoyment, allowing viewers to participate regardless of their difficulties with memory.
The tour, which follows an approach developed at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, promotes inclusivity and provides stimulation and enjoyment for patients, as well as a respite for caregivers. Such programs serve an increasingly important role for the 747,000 Canadians living with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia (which number is expected to double in the next 15 years) and those tasked with caring for them.
The next AGO tour is scheduled for May 10, and those interested are invited to contact the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada for more information, at contact@alzheimertoronto.org or 416-322-6560.
