An article in the January 4th National Post documents a study which suggests that antidepressants are associated with an increased chance of developing brain-destroying dementias, including Alzheimer’s. Researchers found the link even stronger for people under the age of 65 who took antidepressants, particularly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs).
While the study is not conclusive, the findings are expected to raise concerns, since antidepressants are “almost becoming the antibiotic of this century.”
As our aging population continues to grow, there will be an increase in the number of people suffering from diseases of the brain. In Canada, approximately 750,000 people have dementia, and this figure is expected to double within 15 years.
