Presented Paper: Summit on Aging: Demographics & Elder Abuse Uncovered & Understood

Thank you to the organizers of the Summit on Aging – Professionals Seminar, Keep Me SafeCapacity, Risk and Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID), held at Sir Sandford Flemming College at Peterborough on November 6, 2019, for creating the space to have honest discussions on how can we, as a society, as professionals, as regulators, and as lawmakers prevent elder abuse at the initial stages when older client/ patients start experiencing cognitive decline.

I enjoyed speaking on the topic of elder abuse along with my colleague Dr. Kenneth Shulman, who talked about capacity from a clinical perspective and the role of medical experts in assisting the court to determine issues around capacity, and being part of a panel discussion with professionals from various disciplines (legal, health, banking, social services, and law enforcement), who share the passion and recognize the responsibility of keeping the elderly safe.
