Canada is undergoing a major demographic shift. As of 2025, an estimated 19.5% of the population is 65 or older. A growing older population brings with it new opportunities and concerns. By 2030, the number of people in Canada living with dementia could increase 65% compared to 2020. As of January 1, 2025, it’s estimated that 771,939 people in Canada are living with dementia.
Changing demographics render the law as it affects older individuals increasingly important. Older individuals can be particularly prone to legal abuses.
Elder law involves the laws and rights of older adults in all practice areas and is not exclusive to the areas of estates, trusts, guardianship, and powers of attorney. It can involve real estate, corporate, family, personal injury, and a wide array of civil, commercial, and criminal matters.
