BBC News: “Magic Carpet” May Help Older Adults Prone to Falling

BBC News has reported on the development of a so-called “magic carpet” that can detect falls and may assist with predicting mobility issues. The key to detection is a network of optical fibres that are placed under a carpet to sense pressure and movement. The electrical signals are then analyzed by a computer.

The designers based at the University of Manchester, UK have focused its application on the elderly, and hope that it can assist by immediately alerting caregivers when a person falls. As falls are a leading cause of mortality among older adults, this tool could help people get prompt care when needed and perhaps even predict when individuals are at higher risk of falling.

The carpet was exhibited at the Photon12 Conference in Durham, UK.
